(eye movement desensitization & reprocessing)

EMDR is a structured therapeutic technique that involves identifying triggering traumas or events that cause distress and processing through these events without needing to verbalize all the details.  This is done through stimulating the lower-lymbic system (or more primal/survival parts) of the brain through rapid eye movements that mimic REM sleep or different versions of bilateral stimulation.  This activates a deep part of the brain that typically isn't activated while awake or in a fully alert state of mind.

This is not hypnotherapy or hypnosis.  You are in control the entire time!  It is dual awareness of the present and an access to memories or events that feels safe, distant, and close enough to have a new insight or view of these events all at the same time. EMDR is evidence based, used in a variety of settings, and can be used to help with current events, past events, or core beliefs.  It has been proven to improve symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and other mental stressors to work towards overall mental health.

I also use EMDR to help build calming, comfortable, and relaxing resources with the brain.  EMDR helps the brain to download coping skills at ultra fast speeds; because the brain is firing and building "super highways" of neuro networks, this can be used to install new skills and have access to them quickly.  Essentially, EMDR tricks the brain into doing work that is meant to happen while asleep or over a long period of time.

It sounds hokey, I know!  The brain is designed to heal, especially from memories that are scary.  EMDR helps the brain to pull memories into helpful, existing memory networks in the brain.  The brain is amazing!  It can be molded, wants to use be helpful, and is adaptive.  This type of therapy is integrated into talk therapy and used as needed for my clients.  My clients have found it helpful, relieving, and a useful way to get "unstuck" at times!
