From my perspective

I was asked in an interview once, "What would your clients say about you?" My face froze, huh? what? ummmm... I had never really thought about this before. Well, I now have an answer!

My clients would say that I am witty, honest, deeply caring, protective, insightful, observant, kind, curious, loud, and authentic.  That last one I care about the most. It encompasses what therapy is all about to me.  I bring my true self in hopes that I get to know your true self.  Sometimes, people don't know who their true self is and that is why therapy is sought.

Often, people start therapy from a crisis situation, then continue therapy to resolve not only that crisis but all the patterns that have lead up to that crisis.  Most things are not one time events, but patterns of behavior that have shaped how we feel, interact, behave, and what we believe about ourselves.  This is what I'm interested in, not just the venting because it feels good in the moment.  I want therapy to be impactful, for true progress to happen, and for us to work together until goals are met.

I do long term, weekly, integrative therapy (more than a year for most people).  I work from an attachment, interpersonal neurobiology, and psychoanalytic perspective-- with some other stuff mixed in.  We work to create new neuropathways in the brain to help rewire old patterns, behaviors, and learned beliefs (thanks mom!). I believe we must address the core of what is happening or it will be one band-aid, "quick fix" after another.  This ultimately does not lead to true fulfillment in life. The  brain is amazing and wants to be protective and resilient. I help, along with evolutionary biology, to untie old data from what is really happening now.  It is powerful stuff!

Life can be full & wonderful & heartbreaking & tragic & amazing & hard & joyous!  It can be all the things, and you can do all the things, and you can do it without daily suffering.

I so believe in my clients and trust in each of them.  My clients hold all their own magic, I don't hold anyone's magic but my own. I work to help uncover, dust off, and let that magic flow!
